We decided to take the girls to experience Winterlude in Ottawa! We had a great time and a lot packed into 24 hours. We went to Gatineau for the hill sliding (picture to follow later) and then to the Ice Sculptures at the Roger's pavillion (you'll see why later its called Roger's) and then some ice skating on the canal. And of course, we had to eat some of the food offered during winterlude - Taffy in snow and a yummy delicious BEAVERTAIL!! Probably the best part sitting in the snow and eating a nice warm beavertail. Hope you enjoy the post, lots of photos.
A nice photo opportunity, they built a chair and have a staff volunteer waiting to take your camera and snap your photo sitting in the ice chair. Only problem we kept sliding off the chair!
I recommend if you haven't gone or plan on going next year that you go in the evening. It is so different at night with all the colored spotlights they shine on the sculptures - it is absolutely breath taking at night and I would also recommend you go after they are completed. The last night of the first weekened is the prime time to go but we had to head home to get the girls back in time for school the next day. Next year we will try and go the 2nd weekend and in the evening to show the girls how they look with the colored spotlights. Its spectacular.
These were the larger ice sculptures. When we arrived they still had an hour to complete the sculptures. It was neat to see some of the ways they make them foggy or shinny looking. How they melt it to stick a piece on.

Below is a wall of cell phones frozen in the wall. They had all sorts of tables and walls built with all these phones frozen inside. It was really cool. The kids really enjoyed seeing this display. It was called the "Rogers" Pavillion....I wonder why???
All set and ready to go to hit the ice for the very FIRST TIME! Exciting times in a 3 year old life!!
Here is the superskater - First time on skates and is standing without help! That's right, she was up on the skates standing very strongly fairly quickly. We were so delighted that she was having fun and the girls liked being there to experience Madi's first time on skates.
She thinks she can skate now after being on the ice for the first time. I love the innocence.

The girls wanted taffy on stick in snow (Basically overcooked maple syrup that is thick and pretty darn sweet and messy) - I see how kids would like this but trying it for the very first time as an adult was a wee bit too sweet for Mom.
This walrus was completely made out of recycled plastic (mostly water bottles) they had a few things but this by far was the coolest of them all.

Okay, now that I'm done nagging, great pictures. Makes me want to go see it (except for the cold weather)...do they do it in July too????
I'm glad you took so many pictures, it's just like we were there...and since we were too lazy to go this year your pictures were a great substitute! (Is it sad that you made the trip from Belleville yet we couldn't handle a 15 minute drive??)
It was a big treat for the kids, but when I lived there I didn't go that often, so No not Sad! It was nice to have the girl experience winterlude - definitely make the effort again next year.
Madi's helmet didn't fit over her touque, need to buy a hockey/skating helmet.
